What is DBT?

Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) is a type of cognitive behavioral therapy. Cognitive behavioral therapy tries to identify and change negative thinking patterns and pushes for positive behavioral changes.  DBT may be used to treat suicidal and other self-destructive behaviors. It teaches patients skills to cope with, and change, unhealthy behaviors.

HOW DOES DBT WORK?

  • Acceptance and change. You’ll learn strategies to accept and tolerate your life circumstances, emotions, and yourself. You will also develop skills that can help you make positive changes in your behaviors and interactions with others.

  • Behavioral. You’ll learn to analyze problems or destructive behavior patterns and replace them with more healthy and effective ones.

  • Cognitive. You’ll focus on changing thoughts, beliefs, behaviors, and actions that are not effective or helpful.

  • Collaboration. You’ll learn to communicate effectively and work together as a team (therapist, group therapist, psychiatrist).

  • Skill sets. You’ll learn new skills to enhance your capabilities.

  • Support. You’ll be encouraged to recognize your positive strengths and attributes and develop and use them.

WHAT ARE DBT SKILLS?

People learning DBT are taught how to effectively change their behavior using four main Skill-sets.

Core Mindfulness is perhaps the most important strategy is developing mindfulness skills. Mindfulness helps you focus on  the present or “live in the moment.” This helps you pay attention to what is happening inside you (your thoughts, feelings, sensations, and impulses) as well as tune in to what’s happening around you (what you see, hear, smell, and touch) in nonjudgmental ways. Mindfulness skills help you slow down and focus on using healthy coping skills when you are in the midst of emotional pain. The strategy can also help you stay calm and avoid engaging in automatic negative thought patterns and impulsive behavior.

Distress Tolerance help prepare you for intense emotions and empower you to cope with them with a more positive way, allowing you to accept yourself and your current situation.

Emotion Regulation skills allow you to Understand your emotions, reduce emotional vulnerability, and decrease emotions suffering.

Interpersonal Effectiveness helps you to become more assertive in a relationship while still keeping a relationship positive and healthy. You will learn to listen and communicate more effectively, deal with challenging people and respect yourself and others.

What is the Comprehensive Resource Model? (CRM)

CRM neurobiology was developed by Frank Corrigan, MD.

A synopsis of the CRM model and Corrigan’s work was compiled below by Lisa Schwarz, M.ed.

Chronic symptoms, addictions, relationship problems, and behavioral challenges are the presenting problems that bring people to therapy and to doctor’s offices. These are considered defense responses that follow the profoundly difficult emotions that are too much to experience. Terror, grief, rage, shame, pain, and disgust are the feelings that we try to avoid feeling throughout out life. Our mind buries these feelings. Our defense responses or symptoms not only protect us from feeling this intolerable pain, but in the CRM therapy process, gives us the information about the true cause, or root issue resulting from the truth of our life.

Because our nervous system cannot allow us to feel that pain fully and completely, our brains make sure that we have ways to avoid those painful feeling and we call these defense responses.  They are actually the symptoms mentioned above that bring us to therapy and are driven by the need to fight, flight, freeze, hide, avoid, submit or dissociate from those experiences and the pain that goes with them. In the CRM process, we are guiding the client to access within themselves the resources of their mind, body and spirit that makes feeling painful feelings possible. When we can feel the most painful things completely, and step into the pain fully, the need for our defense responses (symptoms, addictions, etc.) are no longer needed.  Our nervous system does not need to avoid, fight, hide or bury the things that have influenced how we have operated and related to ourselves and to others.

Work is done from the time of conception through the present and includes methods for working with generational trauma out of the realm of the client’s conscious knowledge. This is a heart-centered approach in which clients are guided  to embody their true authentic self in their day to day lives.

CRM® was originally developed for use with those individuals who experience the challenges of couples PTSD, severe dissociative disorders and or attachment disorders. However, most psychiatric diagnoses are effectively addressed through the use of this model.

Breathing, connection to our history with nature, our instinctual ability to connect and attach to ourselves or others, and the ability to really feel a connection to our physical body allows us to feel safe enough to try feel deeply to release that pain and terror. For the times when the fear keeps us from being able to develop these resources, the CRM therapist will guide you through these obstacles, CRM clears out the sludge and debris that keeps us from re-membering who we really are, the us that is not defined from our pain and history.

WHAT IS BRAINSPOTTING?

Brainspotting is a trauma therapy that works with the deep brain and the body through its direct access to the autonomic and limbic systems within the body’s central nervous system. It is considered a treatment with profound psychological, emotional, and physical benefits.

This therapy gives us a tool to locate, process and release experiences that are typically out of reach of the conscious mind. These are things we often struggle to even put into thoughts and words.

Brainspotting was developed by David Grand after utilizing a technique he called Natural Flow EMDR.

Below you can watch a Q&A with Cynthia Schwartzberg and Lisa Terry about Brainspotting. Cynthia is the President of Southeast Brainspotting Institute and trained with the creator of Brainspotting David Grand

WHAT IS LIFE COACHING & HOW IS IT DIFFERENT FROM THERAPY?

Many people have heard of "Life Coaches" but what exactly is that? How is different from therapy? A Life Coach is someone who helps you identify your personal or professional goals and develop an actionable plan to achieve them.  It is a partnership and provides accountability. When working with a Life coach you may explore limiting beliefs and identify issues from the past that explain their origin, however, unlike therapy, you will not necessarily spend an exorbitant amount of time focusing on past issues.  This is what makes Life Coaching so attractive. It is solution focused, and brings attention and intention to what the desired outcome is not to what it isn't. Change can be fun when you have a coach and cheerleader in your corner.  Coaching can include a variety of methods and approaches, however, the outcome is the same-- lasting change!  At Infinite Life Creations we will utilize Conversational Hypnosis and other change-oriented methods to create the desired outcome you want at a much faster rate.  You may not have heard of Conversational Hypnosis. This kind of Hypnosis is a method that accesses the unconscious mind without having to close your eyes!

WHAT IS HYPNOSIS?

Let's start with what Hypnosis is NOT.  It is not sleep, mind control, a power exchange, or a loss of control that will cause you to quack like a duck without your awareness.  It does not help everyone or solve everything.  Depending on what internet site you read from you will find different definitions. One simple definition is this: Hypnosis is a means of hacking into the REM (Rapid Eye Movement or dream state) mind state while awake. Usually when we sleep the brain goes into the REM brainwave state for 1/4 of that sleep time. Through Hypnosis, the brain is able to access REM while awake and in a light, or deep trance-like state.  Once in this state, the mind is more susceptible to the power of suggestion. This is what makes Hypnosis useful in correcting unwanted behaviors, and or releasing past trauma's.  According to Human Givens, anyone who can focus their attention, who has a good imagination or who can become emotionally aroused, will, at many points in time, enter trance.  Most people are in a trance-like state most of the day, especially while on social media, watching television, or while driving. Through the use of hypnosis one can bypass the prefrontal cortex, or conscious mind, allowing the suggestions to take hold in the unconscious mind.  It's that simple!

WHAT  CAN I EXPECT FROM A HYPNOSIS SESSION?

All sessions begin with a screening to determine if hypnosis is appropriate for you.  Then, through "pre-talk," we identify the desired outcome.  Through the use of "conversational hypnosis," we will begin bypassing the part of the mind that is conditioned to remain focused on the originating problem, allowing the desired change to begin. Once it is determined what type of process will yield the greatest outcome, then you may be guided into a light or deep trance-like experience through the use of guided imagery, and conversation.   A trance-like state can last from 15 minutes to 45 minutes depending on the person and the situation. In most cases you will feel refreshed and joyful after a hypnosis session.  You may find yourself thinking, feeling, and acting differently, and you may also find yourself unable to focus on the originating problem.  Depending on the nature of the issue, you may need 1 or more sessions.
